ELDORADO (WSIL) -- It seems across the country art programs are struggling to survive in schools, but a teacher in Eldorado is working to change that for students.
High School Art Teacher Ashley Priddy recently began a ceramics program for students making functional pieces such as mugs, bowls and flower vases.
Not only do students make pottery pieces for themselves but they also go out in the community and show others how to do the same.
In January, the residents at Eldorado Rehab and Healthcare were able to make their own push pots. Students will then return this month, so residents can glaze their pieces and eventually keep them.
The ceramics program is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, February 15th showing off their pottery pieces and offering tasty bowls of potato soup and chili, as well as, salad.
It's to raise money for equipment and tools like an additional spinning wheels and a slab roller as the Priddy is starting the program from scratch.
These funds will help keep Priddy from having to use money out of her annual budget for the classroom.
Attendees will also get to see a wheel throwing demonstration and try working the clay themselves while enjoying a live band.
The event is being held at the high school from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $15 and include a ceramic bowl that you can keep and the meal.
Although pre-made ceramic bowls have been sold out, ticket holders can still enjoy the event and be put down to have a bowl made just for them, which they will receive at a later time.
