UNSUNG HERO: 11-year-old saves her cousin from nearly drowning

  • 0

CARTERVILLE, IL (WSIL) -- An 11-year-old girl's quick actions kept her 6-year cousin from nearly drowning in this edition of Unsung Hero.

Carterville resident Jan Morris said her two granddaughters Alana Campbell (11) and Piper Morris (6) was at her house waiting for their swim coach. While they were waiting, both girls were in the pool. Alana was talking to Jan, and Piper was further back near the edge pool. Jan said she began to notice Piper having a seizure, and before she could get all of her words out, Alana had already rushed to her.

"I just remember being in the pool and then turning around and seeing Piper underwater, so I ran over to grab her and take her out of the pool," explained Alana.

Alana said she was scared the entire time but didn't have time to think about being afraid. Jan said Piper was unaware of what was happening, but Alana carried Piper about 19-feet to the ladder so Jan could help her get out of the pool.

"She's (Alana) definitely my hero. That day she reacted so quickly, way before I could have gotten in there to Piper. I just don't know what I would have done without her that day," said Jan.

"I think she's a great hero," added Piper.

Even though there's about a 5-year age difference between the two girls, these cousins like to play together. Piper looks up to her big cousin, and it's no surprise why.
