CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Some residents at the Carbondale Towers contacted us saying they're concerned about their living conditions, including two broken elevators.
Charles Dalton is one of many upset residents in the Carbondale Towers on Mill Street. He says not having a working elevator in their eight-story building is one of many problems.
“You might come downstairs and it's working. When you come back with your groceries, you can't get back upstairs. And so it just became an issue to the point now where it's not working at all, Dalton said.
We spoke to residents who said that moving around without an elevator could be a problem if they're not in good health or on the first floor.
“I had a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler where they cut me out of the car. So I have hip issues, back issues, and ankle issues. And, I like once again, I live on the eighth floor, so it's like two sets of flights between each floor. So that's 16 flights of stairs up and down, Dalton said.
Dalton says the towers provide housing for people over 62 years old, and people with disabilities. By not having a working elevator, he says it makes it harder for some people to move around.
“How do you get your groceries and a walker to the fourth floor? You can't, even if somebody's helping you, Dalton said.
Residents say they were offered other accommodations, however, for some people like Dalton, leaving the area is not an option.
Nancy McGill lived on the 8th floor like Dalton, however she said she couldn't stay in the building.
“There's no way I could walk down eight flights of stairs. I have a couple times, but it just kills my knees because I have an artificial knee, McGill said.
McGill hopes she will be able to move into her apartment again soon.
“They've supposedly paid somebody already, but they haven't come to fix it. So I don't know when it's going to be fixed, McGill said.
Our team did reach out for comments with the company Millennia Housing Management, Ltd. which owns the property. Below is their response...
