Carbondale man dead after Friday's pedestrian-involved crash

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The pedestrian struck in a Friday night crash in Carbondale died on the scene, police now confirm. 

Carbondale police asked the public to avoid the area when they responded to the intersection of East Walnut Street and Wall Street at 10:59 Friday night. Now, they have confirmed the 60-year-old man who was struck while crossing the street died on the scene. 

Police have not yet released the name of the victim. A statement from the department said the family has not yet been notified. 

It remains unknown who drove the car that hit the victim. Carbondale Police say the car fled from the scene after the impact. Nearby witnesses told police the car was seen heading east on East Walnut Street. It was described as a 2001 silver Mercury Grand Marquis with the Illinois registration DS 98884. Police assume the car will have damage from the crash. 

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department has teamed up with Carbondale Police to continue the investigation.
