CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Police have opened an investigation into a stabbing they say resulted in the death of the victim on Saturday morning.Â
According to information released by the Carbondale Police Department, officers learned of the incident at 2:49 a.m. on Saturday, July 20. Reports indicated that the stabbing occurred alongside a vehicle theft in the 500 block of E. Sycamore Street.Â
Investigators say the victim had been driven to an emergency room in another person's car at the time the department learned of the incident. Since learning of the situation, police say the victim succumbed to the stab wounds and died.Â
Police say they spoke to the person who reported the incident. This person said he or she was shot during the incident, but did not believe the wound was life-threatening.Â
Investigators report that all the people involved knew each other prior to the situation. Police have not released the names of any of the involved at this time.Â
Officials say the investigation remains open. The police are receiving help from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the Jackson County Coroner's Office and the Jackson County States Attorney's Office.Â
Officers assure the public they have identified the three people and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.Â
The suspects all remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.Â
