CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL)-- The National Night Out took place on Tuesday night for communities all over our area.

The event aims to build relationships between police and the people in the community.

The Carterville Police Department hosted a special event at Cannon Park.

A couple of the visitors who stopped by was Kerry Cravens and her son. They said they enjoyed meeting new people at the national night out in Carterville.

"Just being out, being able to meet different people and see how everybody's doing," Cravens said.

It's a night meant to foster stronger relationships with the police and Richard Zimmerman says he wants to raise his family in a community they feel comfortable living in.

He says this event is a good way to put names to faces.

"All summer we've been meeting with them, Zimmerman says. “They drive by our street and wave to us, wave to the kids in the yard."

Cravens says they go to the National Night Out every year and says knowing some of the officers by their first names makes it easier for her to call when she needs help.

"In case there's a situation that comes up? And you're not really sure on how to handle it. You got an officer that you can talk to and can help with," Zimmerman said.

But it's not just for the police, emergency management agencies and fire departments were meeting people as well.

“The more comfortable we can have kids with the police, and the EMA and fire, the better relationship we can create with them, Smith said.

Officer Travis Morgan hopes these events help remove any divides between the police and the people they serve.

“But I'm big on the personal relationship between the police and the community. Especially since becoming a school resource officer and seeing the kids recognize you, Morgan says. “So tonight it's a good time. It's great for the kids and the families.
