CARBONDALE, Ill. -- February 3 has been declared "Frederick Douglass Legacy Day" in Carbondale.Â

The decision was announced on Saturday in the presence of Douglass' great-great-grandson, Kevin Douglass. The African American Museum of Southern Illinois announced the news alongside K. Douglass after a breakfast and meet-and-greet with locals.Â
The day hopes to honor F. Douglass' work for civil rights for blacks in America. More information on his work is described in K. Douglass' book, "The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass."Â

The city has hosted K. Douglass all weekend. A dinner was held Friday for him and the locals to honor the history of the area. Additionally, the African American Museum is displaying the Corene's Quilting Creations exhibit, which shows codes from the Underground Railroad Quilts woven into them.
