NWS confirms tornado hits Mt. Vernon area

South Central Transit, Mt. Vernon storm damage, 3.14.2024

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. -- The National Weather Service declared Thursday night's storm a tornado in Mt. Vernon on Saturday. 

The cyclone hit an EF-1 status. Winds from the storm reached up to 90 mph.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. Neither did any houses see major damage. 

The most notable damage came to the Southern Central Transportation (SCT) building, which lost its roof. 

"We're going to keep moving. We're going to keep going, and we're going to get it done," said Supervisor for SCT Alicia Westbrook. "We'll be back up and running real soon."
