Salukis head to MVC Softball Tournament Championship game with win over Illinois State

DES MOINES, Iowa, (WSIL) � The Saluki Softball team is heading to the MVC Tournament Championship game after defeating Illinois State 8-3 on Friday.

SIU started the scoring early. In the bottom of the 1st, Jackie Lis drove in Emma Austin off of a sacrifice fly. SIU up 1-0.

In the second, SIU brought in three more runs after RBIs by Sage Grann, Austin and Lis. SIU up 4-0.

Illinois Stare had a three-run home run in the third to close the gap 4-3.

In the fifth, Hayden Kurtz reached base due to an error which also brought in a run. Then, Grann singled to bring in two, making it 7-3.

Next, Amanda Knutson singled and brought in another run, making it 8-3.

Pitcher MaKenzie Newcomb won her 20th game of the season with zero walks and four strikeouts.

The championship game will be played on Saturday at 1 p.m. against #2 Belmont.
