CARBONDALE (WSIL) --
Thursday the IHSA will let us know the future of high school basketball in the state of Illinois.
Many schools avoided practicing Monday until they learn what the IHSA is going to do.
Carbondale's Jim Miller is entering his 23rd season at Carbondale.
But if we don't have a season, Could Coach Miller already have coached his last game?
Say it ain't so.
"We're still cautiously optimistic about how this thing is going to pan out for us but absolutely to get a season in, maybe my last year coaching maybe not, we'll see but I'm still enjoying myself thoroughly," Carbondale Head Boys Basketball Coach Jim Miller said. "I hate to leave the program with the loss we had last year, the sectionals, that's what I look at and having an opportunity to coach again this year with a youthful team."
This year will present it's share of challenges. The Terriers graduated a lot of players who played key minutes last season. It's back to the basics.
"I love teaching basketball, I love teaching period and to be able to coach during practice and be able to teach during practice and get some kids in here with no varsity experience, no high school experience and be able to groom them and show them how we need to play and how we like to play, its been a pleasure working here at Carbondale."
424 Career wins at Carbondale, 10 regional championships, 2 sectional titles, 2 super sectional titles and a fourth and second place at state, yet Coach Miller doesn't want to talk about his accomplishments. To him he's won just by coaching Carbondale.
"I've been one of the luckiest coaches in the state and when I say that, it means a lot to coach here in Southern Illinois where basketball means a lot to a lot of people and you and I talked in the past and it's where I always wanted to end up in a community where basketball meant something and my last couple of jobs, here and Fairfield, basketball was definitely a high priority for the community as well as the school itself."
