JOHNSTON CITY (WSIL) -- Johnston City is coming off a 40-0 win over Vienna-Goreville in week one.

"Fairly athletic at the receiver position and those kids work very hard at catching the ball and working on their hands and running routes and those techniques so I think we can spread the ball enough to try and run it a little bit and they've been very focused on trying to learn the system and trying to be very sound in what we do," Johnston City Head Football Coach Todd Thomas said.

"I give it to all our coaches, they let us joke around but as soon as it's business time we flip that switch and it's go time but you got to always have fun and joke around but you always got to take it serious and we have that switch and we flip it when it is game time," Johnston City senior Jordan Wininger said.

The Indians got it done on both sides of the ball.

"We hold a lot of pride in defense and holding people to low scoring games so our offense doesn't have to be strained as much so we come out every game prepared, watching film, ready to go," Johnston City senior Caleb Newell said.

Their Quarterback Austin Brown receives a lot of attention, and rightfully so, he's a highlight reel. But he's a team leader and his teammates are ready to give him everything they've got.

"I love it, I picked up the quarterback position last year as the main leader of the football team," Johnston City junior Austin Brown said. "I think I fit the role good, the guys always follow me and I never dog nobody, hold everybody accountable and pick up everyone as well. It's a team, there are 11 people out there, not just one so you can't win with just one person."

"You look for that open hole, you look for the defensive backs as soon as they breakdown and lock on Austin, they are going for him and you just find that open hole, you got a busted play really, and find that open hole," Wininger said.

Austin has a ton of division one offers, but he's very mature.

"It's very busy," Brown said. "A year ago I didn't have to put my days on a calendar but now everything is scheduled out to when I have a phone call 2 o'clock after school or when I have a Zoom call with a coach but it's all about being organized, it's fun, it's a journey but I love it but just got to be organized."
