HERRIN Waltonville/Sesser-Valier used a pair of homers and some timely hitting to pick up a second straight win over a 3A school, beating Herrin Tuesday 7-5.
The Lady Spartans beat Mt. Vernon 14-13 Monday.
After Herrin scored a run in the first to grab a 1-0 lead, WSV answered with two in the second on Kylie Genisio’s two-run single.
The Tigers tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at two. Taylor Cornelius ripped a basehit to right, and when it zipped by the right fielder all the way near the fence, Whitney Keel scored all the way from first.
WSV took the lead with three in the third and then added to it in the fifth. Rebecca Combs led off the inning by turning the first pitch into an outbound rocket that hit the top of the fence and bounced over for a leadoff home run. Two batters later, Rylee Breeze connected for her second homer in as many days, giving the Lady Spartans a 7-2 lead.
Herrin tried to rally, eventually cutting it to 7-5, but could get no closer.
