CARBONDALE (WSIL) — In 40 days on the job, Bryan Mullins has checked off quite a few things on his "To Do" list as head coach, starting with completing his staff.

Mullins has brought on his older brother Brendan, Pat Monaghan, and Jevon Mamon as assistants.

"I know I’m only going to be as good as my staff," Mullins said.  "The locker room and the culture can only get fully intact when the staff is here.  To have the staff I’ve been able to put in place, I’m extremely lucky and fortunate to have these guys with me."

With his staff in place, Mullins has started to put together the building blocks of his first system.

"Teaching the fundamentals, the little things with the offense, the ball movement and the spacing, we’ve really been trying to work on the pace of play and how fast we want to play," Mullins said.

Mullins does not have the luxury of a lot of returning experience, as six of last year’s top nine will graduate.  The returnees are led by senior guards Aaron Cook and Eric McGill.

"They’ve been great," Mullins said.  "I’ve been overly impressed their energy, their coach-ability, and their willingness to learn, and want to get better.  They’re in the gym every single day,  I’ve been happy with them, and I love working with them."

Workouts are done for the spring.  The players have finals next week and then will have the chance to go home for about a month.

"We’ll start summer school June 10th, and we’ll be able to work with them again," Mullins said.  "They’ll be in summer classes.  We’ll play open gym with them, They’ll play open gym, and obviously the recruiting continues throughout the summer as well."

We’ll take a look at Mullins recruiting philosophy tomorrow.
