SESSER, Ill. -- The high school football season is winding down. There are just two weeks left until playoffs start.Â
With week eight almost here, teams are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. One of those teams is Sesser-Valier/Waltonville. The Red Devils are a perfect 7-0 heading into week eight of the season.Â
SVW is fresh off of a dominant win over Eldorado last Friday. One Red Devil had a major impact in the team's Friday night victory, which is why he is our week seven Athlete of the Week.
Senior running back, Dezmond Malone ran for 146 yards on 8 carries and recorded a hat-trick on the ground, finding the end-zone three times in the victory including a long 63-yard score.
Senior running back, Dezmond Malone ran all over the Eagles on Friday night in the Red Devils 46-6 win.
Malone ran for 146 yards on 8 carries and recorded a hat-trick on the ground, finding the end-zone three times in the victory including a long 63-yard score.
The senior tailback is not just effective on the offense. The two-way starter also plays defensive back, and has been giving opposing offenses trouble all season.
Malone’s impressive three-touchdown game on Friday night earns him our week seven WSIL Athlete of the Week award.
"It means a lot, just coming out here, having my teammates carry me on and push me, and carry me through practice, put their bodies on the line in games, it just means a lot and I wouldn’t have it without them, so I’m just thankful they all just came out here and pushed me to be the best I can be," said Malone.Â
Malone is one of the top rushers in the Black Diamond Conference this season with 835 yards and 12 touchdowns through seven weeks, but it has not come easy. Malone put a lot of work in during the off-season, and now it is paying off.
"Last year and my sophomore year, I was smaller and wasn’t getting any yards or carries, I was getting some last year, but I had a goal. And to get to that goal to go into the offseason and workout and hit the treadmill and just get faster, and that’s what I did, and the stats are showing that," added Malone.Â
SVW head coach, Mike Rude is one of the best area coaches around. He has high praise for Malone’s ability to play well on both sides of the ball.
"He is a very versatile, very, very versatile young man as far as an offensive player. But, defensive wise, he’s awful good too. When you’re the school record holder in the 100-meter dash, it’s good to have him back there in the back," said Coach Rude.
Dez and the Red Devils will look to stay undefeated this Friday when they travel to 6-0 Johnston City in a huge Black Diamond Conference Championship game that kicks off at 7 p.m.
