FAIRFIELD, Ill. (WEVV) An officer with the Fairfield Police Department was terminated after being arrested on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, but was never taken to jail thanks to a new law in the state of Illinois.

City officials confirm 22-year-old Logan Trent was the now-former officer who was arrested on those charges.

According to officials, Trent notified a supervisor of his arrest, leading to an internal investigation that resulted in his termination from the department on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Officials with the city say Trent was the newest officer with the department. After completing his academy training, we're told Trent was on duty as a probationary officer for about two months.

In September, Illinois became the first state to abolish cash bail for certain charges through the . The law also allows individuals to avoid jail time based on their charges, and whether or not they're considered a danger to the public or a risk of fleeing prosecution.

Trent's arrest was the result of an incident that took place in the Coles County city of Charleston, which is north of Fairfield, officials said. Trent now has a court date in Cole County set for Nov. 14.
