PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. (WSIL) -- The New Madrid County Sheriff's Office earlier reported an early morning incident on June 22, which detailed one man dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

The sheriff's office identified the man as David Chamberlain, who was found deceased at the intersection of 5th Street and Warren Avenue in Portageville.

Coroner George Delisle pronounced Chamberlain dead at the scene, and Sheriff Joey Higgerson activated the Southeast Missouri Major Case Squad to assist in the investigation.

Authorities arrested 18-year-old Trey Sutton of Portageville on June 23. New Madrid County Prosecutor Andrew Lawson charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

During the investigation, officers discovered a gun in a drainage ditch on County Highway 420. Authorities said this gun is connected to the murder investigation.

Sutton's father, Jeremy Sutton, was also arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

Four others face pending charges for tampering with physical evidence or possession of a controlled substance as well, New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson said.

Higgerson emphasized the importance of cooperation in the investigation.

“There is absolutely no excuse for interfering with or hindering a Murder investigation, and more arrests are expected," Higgerson said. "In particular, I’d like to thank our partner agencies with the SEMO Major Case Squad for their assistance. Within an hour of the first call, investigators from seven different agencies were on the scene collecting evidence and conducting interviews. If not for their tireless efforts, this case would not have come to such a quick resolution.
