Deadly Shooting Suspect in Custody, Faces two Murder Charges

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A 49-year-old man is now in custody and faces murder charges in connection to a deadly shooting incident in Murphysboro.

Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez said Daron L. Woods, 49 of Murphysboro, faces two counts of first-degree murder.

Cervantez says these charges are in relation to a shooting incident where Maurice Funches, 29, died on the night of August 21 in Murphysboro.

Woods turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 22.

Cervantez said he praises the tireless efforts from the Murphysboro Police Department, the Illinois State Police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Williamson County Sheriff's Office.

Woods is due in court in Jackson County, on August 23, 2024.
