METROPOLIS, Ill. (WSIL) -- Firefighters are making sure they are prepared as possible when it comes to responding and helping those in need, despite the multiple inches of snow and bitter cold temperatures they are dealing with.

The Metropolis Fire Department went around the city on Wednesday to clear the snow away around the fire hydrants.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, areas in Massac County received more than five inches of snow with this latest round of winter weather. Because of this, snow has built up around fire hydrants.

Fire crews brushed away the snow from the hydrants to make sure they are able to easily use them in case there was an emergency.

Freighters in Metropolis also took this time to train in cold bodies of water in case they are called out for any water related incidents. The fire department said they took this time to become acclimated to the water and used their cold water suits.
