Sheriff’s office employee arrested, suspended after threatening incident with gun

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- An employee with the Cape Girardeau Sheriff’s Office was arrested after a domestic incident took place on Sunday.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called out to an address on County Road 532 on December 31. After deputies arrived, they found out there was an incident that took place between a son and father.

An investigation started and it was found that the son allegedly brandished a gun and made a threat during the incident, the sheriff’s office said.

Christopher N. Johnston was arrested and faces felony charges of domestic assault in the third degree and unlawful use of a weapon.

The sheriff’s office stated Johnston is an employee with the Cape Girardeau Sheriff’s Office’s Jail Division and was immediately suspended with pay until the internal investigation is complete.

“Our office must be open and transparent to our citizens, and Sheriff Dickerson assures the citizens that this will be handled like any other investigation,� the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office stated in a release. “Johnston is currently being held at a different agency to avoid a conflict of interest.�

A bond was set at $10,000 for Johnston.
