BROOKINGS, S.D. (WSIL) The SIU football team’s offense went silent in the second half as the Salukis drop a 28-10 decision against #3 South Dakota State University.
SIU opened the Missouri Valley Football Conference portion of its schedule Saturday against the Jackrabbits after splitting its first four non-conference games of the season.
The Jackrabbits could only muster a field goal and a touchdown against a Saluki defense that blocked the extra point attempt on the SDSU touchdown.
SIU silenced the crowd of 13,776 at Dana Dykhouse stadium after quarterback Kare Lyles found Nigel Kilby for a 19-yard touchdown. Southern would kick the extra point with 12 seconds left to take a 10-9 lead at the half.
But SDSU which lead the MVFC in total defense entering Saturday pitched a shutout in the second half and scored 18 unanswered points highlighted by a 64-yard touchdown run by Jackrabbits running back Pierre Strong in the third quarter that gave SDSU the lead for good.
SIU will come back home to Saluki Stadium with a 2-3 record as they get set to host Illinois State University on Saturday, October 12 at 6 p.m
