Southern Illinois Lawmakers Urge IDOC to Temporarily Stop Mail at Correctional Facilities

HARRISBURG, Ill. (WSIL) -- Southern Illinois lawmakers are urging the Illinois Department of Corrections to temporarily suspend processing non-legal mail in correctional facilities throughout the state after multiple exposure incidents have been reported taking place recently, resulting in many sent to the hospital.

A letter to the Illinois Department of Corrections Acting Director Latoya Hughes was shared to the public by State Senator Dale Fowler and signed by Fowler, State Senator Terri Bryant, State Representative Patrick Windhorst, State Representative Paul Jacobs, State Representative Dave Severin and State Representative David Friess, and stated they urge the mail to be temporarily suspended until safety protocols are put in place. 

The letter also states it is necessary to safeguard the well-being of correctional officers and all others within the institutions.
