VERGENNES, Ill. (WSIL) -- One person is dead and another injured after a multi-vehicle crash in Jackson County on Sunday.

The Jackson County Sheriff's office said the crash happened on Illinois 13/127, north of Illinois 4 near Vergennes on October 20, at 6:10 p.m.

One person was reported as being trapped in a vehicle and a vehicle was on fire.

Three vehicles were going south on Illinois 13/127 when one vehicle, a 2016 Honda Accord, driven by Lyric Irby, 18 of Peoria, went to pass a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, and a head-on collision occurred with a vehicle going northbound, the sheriff's office said in a report. The vehicle going northbound was a 2010 Ford Edge, driven by a St. Charles, Missouri man.

Both vehicles had major damage and one vehicle was on fire, the report stated.

Irby's vehicle caught fire in the engine area, the sheriff's office stated. Other motorists went to help Irby and broke the window with a hammer and got her out of the vehicle; however, authorities said she was later pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.

The driver of the northbound vehicle in the crash was taken to an area hospital.

During the time of the crash, the Pathfinder and Pontiac Grand Prix tried to get out of the way, but had a minor crash between the two, the report added. Those drivers were not injured.

The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. Assisting the sheriff's office at the crash site was the Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Vergennes Fire Department and the Murphysboro-Pomona-Somerset Fire Protection District.
