MARION The Southern Illinois Miners started the second half of the Frontier League season in impressive fashion, shutting out Joliet 8-0.
On Pirate night at Rent One Park, the Miners showed the Slammers no mercy, scoring three in the third and never looking back.
Stephen Lohr’s two-run single got the scoring started. Two batters later, Jamey Smart gapped one into left center to score Gianfranco Wawoe for a 3-0 lead.
The Miners added two more in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to build an 8-0 lead.
That was way more than enough for Marty Anderson. Anderson scattered six hits over seven shutout innings, striking out five along the way. Cody Thompson got the last six outs to complete the shutout.
The Miners improve to 28-23, while the Slammers fall to 20-32.
The two teams will continue their series at 6:05 Saturday.
Notes:
WSIL and the Miners are sponsoring a free baseball clinic Saturday afternoon for kids ages 5 and up from 2:00-3:00 at Rent One Park. Miners players will man different stations, teaching the kids different drills. Kids should bring their own baseball gear. Sign up will be prior to the camp at 2:00 at the ballpark.
